Battle Wounds

As I sit here and blog at my computer, I hear hundreds of red beetles bouncing off of our front windows. Every night this summer, they have come to our front porch to "see the light." They throw a frenzied party and bounce around like there's no tomorrow ... and then we find them lying dead on their backs out there by morning light. So, for them, there is no tomorrow... It's a strange habit these beetles have. They are trying to have fun, but they keep killing themselves.

Now, here's the segway/correlation to my children today (and it might be a stretch): My children go 1000 miles an hour, playing hard and end up hurting themselves badly. They have battle wounds from the circumstances of the day. I will try to recount...

First, the toy room shelf fell over, narrowly missing Haleah, though she was under it. Luckily it landed on another shelf which kept it off the ground. Talk about heart attacks! Then, the kids woke up today with about 1000 bug bites from our party last night. I had put bug spray on them, but it must've been the kind that the mosquitoes relish. It looks like I've totally neglected my children. Here's a word for parents: The bug spray with no Deet doesn't work!

Next, Kaelah shoved her bottom teeth, not once, but twice, on two separate occasions, into her upper lip, from falling on one thing or another. Her entire lip is swollen and bleeding red. Then, Kaleah also fell on a stray piece of Tupperware that had been taken to the toy room. There is a dent in her head now. Here is a picture of poor K.K. today. If I could take it all back, I would. Haleah said to her, "Did you hurt yourself, Kaelah?" And Kaelah nodded "yes." Then Haleah said, "You pooor sweeeeet baby!" My thoughts exactly.
